Anuradhapura
Anuradhapura, the earliest historical capital of Sri Lanka, is considered the cradle of Sinhalese civilization dating back to the 4th century BC. This sacred city still reflects its ancient grandeur and historical significance.
For over a thousand years, the kingdom was ruled by 117 monarchs who constructed magnificent palaces, vast reservoirs, advanced irrigation systems, pleasure gardens, and impressive Buddhist temples. Some of these creations rank among the greatest architectural achievements of the ancient world, second in scale only to the pyramids of Giza.
Today, the city’s surviving ruins, restored temples, and sacred stupas offer visitors a powerful glimpse into its rich cultural and religious heritage.
